“During a visit to a mental hospital before I left Hong Kong, a patient politely asked me how a country that prided itself on being the oldest democracy in the world had come to be handing over his city to another country with a very different system of government, without either consulting the citizens or giving them the prospect of democracy to safeguard their future. Strange, said one of my aides, that the man with the sanest question in Hong Kong is in a mental hospital.”Chris Patten Financial Times

My Sister's Keeper

My Sister's Keeper 小說 by:Jodi Picoult

Anna was conceived as a "harvest child" and genetically engineered, through in vitro fertilization, so that she would be a genetic match for her older sister Kate, who was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia when she was two years old.

When Anna was born, her cord blood was donated to her sister, but when the leukemia returned she then had to donate blood and bone marrow. Kate's kidneys fail when she is sixteen and Anna is thirteen. Kate's only chance for survival is a kidney transplant.

Because she would be a closer match than an unrelated donor and no other family member is a match, Anna is expected to donate one of her own kidneys to save her sister.

Anna decides to hire a lawyer to become medically emancipated from her parents in order to gain the right to make the decision for herself. Her lawyer, Campbell Alexander, works for her pro bono.

At the end of the book it is revealed that the reason Anna initiated the lawsuit was because her sister didn't want her to donate the kidney. Kate said she no longer wanted to go through life in a hospital and was ready to die.

After the trial Anna is granted medical emancipation and Campbell is her medical advisory. However, immediately after the trial while Anna and Campbell are driving to the hospital, they are involved in a severe car accident, rendering Anna brain dead, while Campbell survives.

Campbell makes the decision to donate Anna's kidney to Kate after the doctors notify Anna's parents of her death.

Conceived by means of in vitro fertilization, Anna Fitzgerald (Abigail Breslin) was brought into the world to be a genetic match for her older sister, Kate (Sofia Vassilieva), who suffers from acute promyelocytic leukemia.

Their lives have been intertwined because of their donor-recipient relationship from the minute Anna was born. Anna suffers, such as losing the chance to go to a prestigious hockey camp in order to be there when her sister needs her, but when she turns 13 and Kate goes into renal failure, needing Anna's kidney, Anna sues her parents for medical emancipation.

Attorney Campbell Alexander (Alec Baldwin), who has a guide dog he refuses to reveal the function of, agrees to work for Anna pro bono

Sigh! Sigh! Sigh!
