“During a visit to a mental hospital before I left Hong Kong, a patient politely asked me how a country that prided itself on being the oldest democracy in the world had come to be handing over his city to another country with a very different system of government, without either consulting the citizens or giving them the prospect of democracy to safeguard their future. Strange, said one of my aides, that the man with the sanest question in Hong Kong is in a mental hospital.”Chris Patten Financial Times

Contract(s)!

Have you watched "Cast Away" by Tom Hanks? Is that how you envision a perfect simple life? :-)

Exile, Cast Away

Do you still remember this poem?

My youth winged and soared above the earth;
My soul whispered its dreams amongst the hills.
I didn't see it coming, this fallen angel of habit;
Till it was too late, thirty years hence.

Exile,I have no memory about Woodstock (educate me why it is related to rebel, please!) except I heard Ang LEE 's has a new movie called "Taking Woodstock".

Woodstock wasn't just a concert. It took place at the time when young boomers became teens.

Back in the 50's when baby boomers were young children, the idealized suburban family was one where the mother stayed home and the father was the authority figure. Everyone had a role to play. Like the hit TV show "Leave it to Beaver". America was still very traditional and repressive then. Politicians liked to keep it that way. Even now, conservative describe the rebellious 60's as "the counter cultural and political movements that were out of step with the American mainstream".

A lot of people believe that Woodstock set stage for the later civil right movement, demonstration against the Vietnam War and women's liberation. In the 60's, women were finally encouraged to go back to work and make money. Traditional family value was under big transformation. Also with birth control, women felt free for the first time to experience with their sexuality.

Many boomers (now in their 50's and 60's) recalled the spirit and the excitement at Woodstock, rejoiced that they weren't alone in their frustrations.

Most people live the kind of life society tells us to. I see a lot of that among the Chinese. It is good and it serves its purpose but it is not without cost. Woodstock was a symbol if nothing else that we should live the life we want, not what others tell us.

Oh ! Exile thank you for educating me about Woodstock spirit.

I only knew it was "No war Make love", "Peace", "Hippies", "Marijuana” in the 60s.
