Recently Blogger upgraded identity verification with more visible characters/ pictures so I also reinstated this requirement to filter SPAM postings.
Furthermore,Blogger spam filter has become overly sensitive, your comment may automatically relocate into the spam locker temporarily, awaiting for my discretion. I shall visit the spam locker frequently to unlock your comment, please remain patient.
Hope it will not cause too much inconvenience Thank you for your attention
This is interesting stuff. Judging from 百家姓, my people definitely weren't/aren't the brightest of the crowd.
ReplyDeleteI am curious if Chinese people discriminate against each other base on our last names. Say, Mr Lee may think he is "better" than Mr Ding...??
Exile from Hong Kong,
ReplyDeletethanks for your input I guess base on the Last Name no one can not tell very much of one's character, personality, talent, and etc etc.
There are some fortune-tellers who can tell the fate of a person based on the giving name and make suggestions.
I have no idea how the westerner(s) discriminate against each other base on the last name. Probably an english may find out some one was an irish origin based on his/ her last name. Can you tell me more?
As for the chinese in the ancient china possibly there was this "門第" originated from their last name. At and in present day HK I guess not much discrimination.
People in the west are just as interested in genealogy as the Chinese.
ReplyDeleteActually family tree drawing is a standard school project for elementary school
kids. Do you know westerners didn't have hereditary surnames until 1000 years ago?
Well, America is a country of immigrants. Before meeting someone, I
suppose people will have a mental picture of what the person is supposed to
look like. A "Johnson" vs a "Wong". A "Churchill" vs a " Parris". Even
though you can't be so sure any more nowadays. Racial profiling bases on our
last names is an unspoken tactic people use everyday in the real world in America.
I wouldn't be so naive to think that my Chinese last name won't hurt me when I send
out resumes. Also we have common regional last names. For example, in my city
in southern California, if someone is a "Silva", the chance is that their people were
fishermen from a hundred years ago. Or hey if you are a Rockerfeller, you better
be rich, right?
Sounds like the Chinese hereditary surnames mostly derived from geography.
In the west, they often use physical characteristic, e.g a man with strong arm
became "Armstrong"; also by place, "Churchill" is for someone lived near
a church on the hill, then there is "Johnson", derived from the son of John.
Interesting stuff. I am such a nerd, haha....
d
Exile,Thank you very much for a comprehensive reply. I learnt many new knowledge.
ReplyDeleteSo it was quite like the Japanese whom started to form surname when they needed to register with the government after "明治維新"。 Need not to say they created many funny surnames.
Exile, as for what you said:“I wouldn't be so naive to think that my Chinese last name won't hurt me when I send out resumes.”
ReplyDeleteChinese are famous for their fastlearning, hardworking, flexibility, intelligence, and versatility, etc etc
IF still not satisfied, you also have the advantage when you married an native american to replace your last name with HIS.
Marry someone for his European last name, haha...?? Good idea. I better make sure it rhymes with my Chinese name too :-)
ReplyDeleteExile from Hong Kong, Former Washington state governor and present commerce secretary Gary Locke is a chinese American, his way of spelling his chinese last name did not suggest his chinese origin.
ReplyDeleteExile,Furthermore, former canada governess general: Adrienne Clarkson is a chinese woman from HK, she keeps the last name of his divorced husband, and even later she remarried and yet keeping Clarkson as her last name.
ReplyDeleteGary Locke is third generation American. It wasn't unusual for early U.S immigrants to modify their last names for assimilation purpose or to avoid discrimination. For example, after WWI, German immigrants routinely changed their German sounding names to avoid repercussion. Russian Jews and the Chinese did the same. When Locke's grandmother first arrived from China, I bet she didn't have birth certificate, so I suppose the immigration officer just granted her a last name "Locke" (Lok). Nowadays, most immigrants just keep their original names, or unless you want to name yourself "Lady Gaga" or something weird like that :-)
ReplyDeleteExile, you meant his father was following his grandmother's maiden name?so did Gary?
ReplyDelete“When Locke's grandmother first arrived from China, I bet she didn't have birth certificate, so I suppose the immigration officer just granted her a last name "Locke" (Lok). ”
Oh, I'm sorry. I meant his grandfather.
ReplyDeleteExile, it was not uncommon for chinese to "入贅" and the children follow the mother's clan last name.
ReplyDeleteIn fact I couldn't find the english word for "入贅" it just gave me plain translation ==> marry and live into the bride's family being the son-in-law by adoption. So it was not common/ exist in the western world.
Mr Fresh! HAHAHA....you are funny :-)
Exile, indeed freshdesigner is hilarious.
ReplyDeleteWell his suggestion is quite male chauvinistic and is a male chauvinism idea.
Speaking of having children, I found a book at the library called "40 good reasons not to have children". The original edition was published in France in 2007. The author is Corinne Maier. She asks everyone to reject the epidemic of "baby mania". As a woman, I find the book empowering. Yes, life can be good without children..
re exile,
thanks! ^-^
Exile, I guess she mainly gave the female perspective of not having children.
ReplyDeleteIronically, the author and her husband have two children! But she said if she had to do it all over again, she would not have done it. Besides labor pain, I guess man and woman go thru similar thought process before they decide to have kids.
ReplyDeleteExile, Corinne Maier was smart she chose to marry Father with 2 kids, stepmother is not uncommon in the western world.
ReplyDeleteAre you sure those aren't her own kids? It doesn't say anything about her being a stepmother on the book cover. hmm...
ReplyDeleteSBB:
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link to here. I quite enjoy the article and the exchanges btwn you, exile and Fresh Designer.
